Katakana Pro is a free to play educational app published by Fast Break Apps. This app will help you learn katakana, which is a writing system that anyone learning Japanese should learn. It offers 46 characters and works very simple: it displays you a katakana character and offers three possible options in romaji. It’s up to you to select the right option. Continue doing this until you have 10 stars for one character and you’ll have mastered it. Then, continue mastering all 46 katakana characters!
I used this app to strengthen my katakana skills, as they were rather weak compared to my hiragana skills. It took me a mere 20 minutes to master all 46 characters, and I’ll continue practicing regularly to maintain my knowledge of the katakana characters, as I’m sure they’ll fade in time otherwise.
Katakana Pro is not complete, however. The 46 katakana characters that you learn with this app are just the basics; additionally, there are the characters called ‘gojuon’ (litterally: fifty sounds) – these are used to describe more sounds. They are divided into the following: dakuon (20x), handakuon (5x), yoon (36x), sukuon (1x) and another 6 additional characters. Although the gojuon are easy to learn once you’ve mastered the basic 46 katakana characters, it would still have been useful if Katakana Pro would have included these characters in their app.
Katakana Pro offers excellent graphics, a straight-forward interface but sadly no audio, which is a huge downer for new people and people who prefer to learn by hearing. If you’re already familiar with the pronunciations however or you simply want to brush up your skills, Katakana Pro is an excellent free app for you to use.
